City Manager George Forbes has over 40 years of Public Administration experience. George began his public administration career in Yankton, South Dakota in 1976 as the Administrative Assistant to the City Manager. After surviving the coldest winter on record in South Dakota, he decided to move to Florida. He became the City Manager in Clermont, Florida in 1979. After six years he moved to Boulder City, home of the Hoover Dam located on Lake Meade, in the Las Vegas metropolitan area. He was the City Manager of Boulder City, Nevada for 10 years beginning in 1985.
George decided to make the move back to Florida in 1995, when he accepted the position of City Manager in Jacksonville Beach. He says in his career he has moved from the arctic, to the subtropics, then to the desert and back to the future in Florida.
George received his B.A. from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and his Master's degree in Public Administration from the University of Colorado.
He was number three in the first Draft lottery and likes to say that is still the only thing he has ever won in his life. He served two years in the Army in Ansback, Germany with the 2/28th artillery battalion. George was a soldier of the quarter and also received the Army Commendation Medal.
George has been married for 41 years to Monica, who is a CPA and also works in Jacksonville Beach. They have one daughter, Amanda, who graduated from the University of Central Florida and works in Orlando.
With 22 years of service working for the citizens of Jacksonville Beach, it should be noted that George is the longest serving City Manager Jacksonville Beach has ever had - going all the way back to our first City Manager who started in 1937.
