WHAT IS CRIME PREVENTION?
Any action that reduces the likelihood that a crime will occur. Crimes occur when you have desire, ability, and opportunity. Although we can’t do much to eliminate a criminal’s desire or ability, we can eliminate the opportunity.
There are four components of effective crime prevention:
1. KNOWLEDGE - Staying current with changing crime trends
2. OBSERVATION - Paying attention to your surroundings
3. COMMUNICATION - If you see something, say something!
4. SECURITY - Ensuring your property and behaviors are not inviting to criminals
